Let's talk feminism for a bit.

thequietworld:

Tuesday in one of my seminars, we were discussing feminist literature, and a boy in my class said “I’m not a feminist, but I’m not a woman-hater”. It was just the most perfect statement to me, because I feel like it represents a picture of feminism in the modern age. There’s no surprise in the matter that people these days mostly sneer at feminism. I think that a lot of people, for some reason, think that the movement has some how run its course. It bothers me that just because women are allowed to have good careers now and can generally choose a free lifestyle (though this is debatable), people believe that modern-day feminists are nuisances to society.

The disheartening thing about all of this is that it causes people to fear labeling themselves as feminists when generally, they probably have feminist ideals. Though one may uphold the values, I feel that only will those values matter when they have the label of being a part of the bigger cause. Because when people shy away from the idea of the word ‘feminism’, they really are putting a blanket on those ideals. Believe me, I would love to get to the point in society, when the word ‘feminism’ was obsolete; when gender equality was peaking to a point where it became a societal norm for every person to be regarded as an equal, no matter what gender they are. But that is not the case. Not anywhere in the world. And why is it a dirty word? Why do people cringe at the idea that they might be labeled as such? Why do they cringe when other people purport that they are one? I feel like it can only be a part of the structural sexism, that patriarchy’s influence is so subtle and almost, dare I say, devious, that it is has filtered into the minds of people who might label themselves as feminists if they would only open themselves up to education on the topic. One of my biggest pet peeves is when women are asked if they are feminists, and they say that they do not subscribe to the name because all of their lives they have been treated as equals. That they have always felt empowered, so they feel no need to ‘be feminist’. Typically, these are the things said by women of Western culture, obviously, and what bothers me about this sentiment is that by ignorance on the matter, they do not even realize that they do face sexism everyday, even if they do no realize it. These are the kinds of things I have heard a few celebrities say, and I am sorry, but a female celebrity is sexualized everyday, and by not learning about the history of this movement, they are not realizing it. I also usually hesitate to throw the word ‘privilege’ around just because I feel like it can become a knee-jerk response in a lot of issues that do not get to the real basis of the subject, but that is exactly what that kind of statement reeks of. Privilege. Well, I am so proud that you have been empowered all of your life, but it does not work that way for everyone in the world. Women in developing nations are always more likely to live in poverty than men. Women in developing nations are prone to having to deal with horrible positions in U.S. corporations’ sweatshops because their only other option is selling their bodies. This means that companies can treat them however they want, and pay them what they want. Because they have no choice. Because they do not have educational opportunities or access to good healthcare and birth control.

By ignoring the idea of feminism and not educating one’s self on the movement, by fearing the word and running away from the label, by saying things like ‘I’m not a feminist, but I’m not a woman-hater’ only encourages ignorance, in my opinion. It’s important to examine our culture, examine our lives, and feel empathy for women in other cultures who have it much worse than us. And only by not running away from the movement can we began to work towards real gender equality, one that does not just affect the Western world, but for women everywhere.
